After reading this far into the book my personal opinion about Esme has completely changed because at the beginning I felt that she didn’t really want the job but now I can actually see that she truly cares about her students and she loves her job. An example from the book is when it’s the little girl’s birthday passed and nobody cared but Esme gave her a cupcake and sang happy birthday to her.
From what I have read so far about the book, Esme seems like she really enjoys being a teacher and has a very specific teaching style. Because she has to teach inner city kids, she knows she has to be harder on them than their parents are. A good example of this in the book is when the little boy was misbehaving in class and kept telling the teacher to "suck his dick". She was tired of it and pulled him out of the class room and told him to pull his pants down; ever since then he hasn't said anything wrong to her. She wants her students to be responsible and she shows this in another selection of the book where she gives her students a due date for a book and nothing else. I respect her teaching ways and I feel like if I was a teacher, I wouldn't deal with disrespectful kids or adults either.
